Sinhala and Tamil New Year🌞💛
The Sinhala and Tamil New Year, or Aluth Avurudda and Puthandu, celebrated in mid-April, marks the sun's transition from Pisces to Aries and the end of the harvest season in Sri Lanka. It is a vibrant cultural festival featuring auspicious times (nekath) for rituals like lighting the hearth, preparing traditional milk rice (kiribath) and sweets, and visiting family.
Marking a new beginning, the festival emphasizes togetherness, reconciliation, and gratitude. The festivities often start with Nonagathaya (neutral period), where people refrain from work and focus on religious activities. Following this, families light the hearth, usually with a new pot, to prepare kiribath and traditional sweetmeats like kavum, kokis, and aasmi. These rituals are believed to bring prosperity, health, and happiness for the upcoming year.
Astrologically determined times dictate all activities, including lighting the hearth, starting work, and exchanging money, strengthening the nation's cultural heritage.
Wearing new clothes and engaging in traditions like exchanging betel leaves with elders to seek blessings, and gifting money, are core aspects of this celebration.
The post-ritual season is filled with joy, as village and urban areas host traditior games such as Raban Gasima (drumming), Gudu Keliya (a traditional game), tug war, and swing sets (onchili. These activities provide a platform for communities unite and share joy.
