Sri Lanka possesses a rich biodiversity with over 1400 medicinal plant species deeply integrated into traditional ayurveda,Siddha and deshiya chikithsa system. These plans often found in home gardens or wild areas provide primary healthcare for over 80% of the population. Key plans include Gotukola home memory memory, Venivel for infections and Neem four detoxifying. 

Commonly used herbs, such as ginger, turmeric, and moringa are essential for daily remedies. These natural medicines are utilized in various from like teas concoctions, pastes and oils to treat ailments including respiratory issues, skin diseases, and diabetes. Medicinal flowers like Palol I used for bronchial issues and many species are classified based on their heating or cooling properties in traditional therapies . The use of this plants is essential for wellness and is a cornerstone of Sri Lankan culture, and natural healthcare.




•Gotukola is a perennial herb native to Asia widely used in traditional ayurvedic medicine for its potential cognitive enhancing, skin healing, and anti-inflammatory properties. Rich in antioxidants, it is consumed as a leafy vegetable and used as a supplement to aid in reducing anxiety , treating venous insufficiency and improving skin conditions.


Neem is a fast growing evergreen tree native to the Indian subcontinent renowned as ‘’nature pharmacy‘’ in Ayurveda. Every part of the tree leaves, bark , seeds, and roots, powerful antiseptic , antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is widely used for medicinal, cosmetic, and agricultural purposes.Neem oil is commonly used to treat, acne, eczema and psoriasis due to its antifungal and anti inflammatory properties.


Venivel also known as tree turmeric or false Calumba in English is a critically endangered woody climber native to South Asia, including Sri Lanka. Renowned in Ayurveda it’s yellow stem is used to make medicinal drinks to treat fevers, skin ailments , aches and infections due to its high barberine content.


Turmeric is a vibrant yellow-orange spice derived from the rhizome of the Curcuma longa plant a member of the ginger family native to Southeast Asia. Renowned for its warm, earth, flour, and intense color it is a staple in curry powders and a ingredient in traditional medicine and cooking often used as a natural food dye. The primary compound is curcumin, a powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agent.



Moringa, often called the‘’ miracle tree‘’ or‘’ drumstick tree‘’ is a highly nutritious fast growing plant native to India widely used for its edible leaves , pods, and medicinal properties. It is rich in vitamins capital A ,C, B6, iron, calcium, and protein, making it an excellent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and therapeutic food source.

Finally, Sri Lanka is an island with an ancient medicine and medicinal plants, which is confirmed by studying the medicine of the past.
